my evinrude 1995 40hp motor runs well except when i put it in gear (forward or reverse) it will make a clanking noise as the prop spins. the noise goes away when i increase the throttle. the noise seems to be coming from the gear case. does anyone know what possiblilities i should look into. i recently changed the lower unit oil. any other maintainance things i could possible do to help this noise. thanks for the help in advance. i know this is kind of general but any advice will help.

remove you prop. check the shaft for any play. make sure the thrust washer is in place. you've got something wrong.
