hi, i brought a 50hpmerc blue band and have had a few problems i replaced the exhaust plate and starter motor. but the engine is a pig to start and when it did run the engine died as soon as i tried to accelerate so i replaced the plugs but this did not help so i put it in to a marine garage and they to told me that it was the carbs they told me that they had reconditioned them
but it had the same problem when i whent out again they had the engine back several times and still could not fix it they admitted defeat could any one suggest what the problem might be.
thanks

What other information do you have on the motor. Year, how long have you owned it, any mechanical history?

Noticed this is your first post. Welcome to the forum. Somone here will get you running. I'm not the expert, but the expert will need the information to help you out.

Somewhere on this forum, I forget exactly where, is an FAQ thread called "Awakening a Sleeping Outboard." That info will help you run a basic check of your motor, ID any problems and get them corrected. The Merc 50 hp's from that era are great motors, real workhorses. Don't give up on it unless it fails to pass the basic inspections in the thread I have mentioned.

Re: poorly blue band

This seems to be a recurring theme. Guy takes a motor to a shop. Shop does something and says its fixed. Returns motor to guy. Guy tries motor and problem remains. Don't shops actually TEST a motor before returning it? I run a small outboard shop on the side and if a motor comes to my shop with an issue, it doesn't leave until it is right. If the complaint is hard starting, it doesn't go until it starts on three or fewer pulls every time! It just burns me that so many posts here have people who have taken motors to shops, spent a great deal of money, and gotten their motors back with no improvement in performance.

Okay, got that rant off my chest. Back to the issue at hand...

Couple things to check. Make sure the choke linkage and actuator are giving the carbs FULL choke when activated. It's not uncommon for these linkages to get loose with age and start closing only part way. These Mercs are typically on the cold-blooded side and like full choke when starting cold.

Second, did the shop just pull some carb plugs and blow things out with carb spray, or did they actually remove the carbs, clean them thoroughly and replace all the innards with what comes in the kit? Removing those carbs takes a bit of doing with the ignition and starter apparatus in the way, and it's not unheard of for someone to take a shortcut and just try to clean it the easy way.

Ask the shop some questions. Find out EXACTLY what they did. Ask them if they did a compression test (a first check for any motor that comes into my shop, regardless of the issue). Ask them if they actually tested the motor on the water or in a test tank. Ask for the replaced parts from the carbs (float, needle, seat, gaskets, etc.). Ask if they checked the fuel pumps.

Good luck!

1st WHen starting choke the crap outta it like it Owes you money. Blue Bands are drinkers when it comes to starting. Secondly you need a Link/Sync. sync the mechanical advance to the Link of the carbs.,,,,,I know it;s on this site somewhere....

He's another story for you to add to your list...

Guy take boat to ramp and launches boat. Guy tries to start engine... Won't start. Another guy asks a third guy (who is a mechanic) to look at first guy's engine. Because third guy is a nice guy (and figures the fish can wait a little while) he does.... you know what he finds? First guy had taken engine to a shop and the shop had replaced the power pack (engine is 2 cyl Evinrude). Mechanic guy swaps plug leads... engine runs well. The shop had replaced the power pack and not even test run the engine!!!! How do I know this? I'm third guy!

Cheers,

Chris..................
