I am changing the impeller in the water pump as preventative maintenance on my 1999 Caravelle with a 3.0 L Mercruiser Alpha I Generation II. When I seperated the lower unit a piece fell out. It looks like a semi-circle metal piece with some silicone or rubber type substance covering most of it. It looks like it might fit around that 90 degree shift lever? Anyone know what this is and how it goes back?

http://www.boatfix.com/merc/Servmanl/14/14notice.pdf

the full manual you click on the ABC letters on page 4 to open each section

the water pump is down on page 75

Did you remove the drive OR drop the lower unit

it is a bit hard to do without pulling the compleat drive as small parts like the black quad ring are all that is keeping in the oil when you put it back toghter

It seems to be that is what it is, half of a water flapper or water shutter. I talked to a parts salesman and he said that volvo took theirs out because it could do more harm when it fails and he said there is no telling how long it has been bad and he wouldn't replace it. Any thoughts

It is a cheap & easy fix on a Mercruiser & can potentially save you from water intrusion..... ;)
