'81 Johnson 90 HP. What's the resistance range supposed to be for trim sending unit?

What's the mfg's part number for this (I've looked at the BRP site and I'm not seeing it).

Any aftermarket replacements that aren't going to cost an arm and a leg?

I'm dissecting my bad one, there sure isn't much to these things. Absolute worst case, if I can ever dig out all the potting compound I should be able to replace the potentiometer.

Re: trim sending unit

The trim sender back on the engine is a variable resistance thing. You set your multi meter to measure resistance (ohms). Make sure the battery in the multimeter is good because current is needed for it to measure resistance. Then, you put the multimeter probes on the two sender wires and measure the ohms when the sender is in the full up vs. full down position.

Various outboard makes have differing specs for this - some are high resistance "up", low (or zero) "down"; some are opposite. The gauge needs to be matched to this spec, whatever it happens to be for your outboard's sender.

Follow this link for your specific numbers, Good luck.
