9.9 or 15hp Carb?

Hi,

I have a 9.9hp 1982 Evinrude outboard that I believe someone changed the carb on, I want to rebuild it.

It has the number 388275 stamped into the top. Is this a 9.9 or a 15 hp carb?

I tried to lookup the number using the BRP Parts Catalogs online but no luck.
I read the articles in the FAQ forum and can't tell for sure.

i can't get any match for 388275. 436990 and 436991 are carb assembly #s. and according to BRP both have the same carb.

Go to FAQ 9.9/15hp OMC Engines by "The Machinist".

He tells you the difference between a 9.9 carb. and a 15 carb. Funny how many carbs you see on ebay that say they fit both models. Yes the bolt pattern is the same but the throats are different. Rick.

I found a reference to the part number in the APBA 2007 stock inspection manual online for legal OMC outboards.

"OMC Carburetor assembly part number 397653 is stamped into a tag that is
fastened to the carburetor. 388275 is stamped into the top of the die-cast carburetor body assembly. Earlier sand- cast carburetors may also be used as long as they meet all specifications."

I tried to look up 397653 but it doesn't come up as a valid number either.

I read the article from the machinist on carbs. According to his article, on an 82, my carb should have a plastic bowl, mine is steel, I have a black bowl gasket which means it should have a cork float and be a 79 or earlier carb, except he also states he's seen 82 and 86 motors with metal carbs. from looking at the pictures he has posted with 9.9 and 15 carbs side by side, I would guess mine is a 15, but I have to pull it off an measure the throat to be sure.
