Default Transom + Seat replacement 14' Aluminum

I have been given an aluminum 14' starcraft v-hul with a rotted transom and seats that I will need to replace or rebuild before I can use it. Does anybody have any tips or instructions about this? I am pretty handy however I am an admitted boat beginner so I will listen to any tips or advice the experts on the board can provide. Thanks.

Tony

Welcome to Iboats. You could possibly use seacast on the transom, depending on the transom. I have no personal experience in using it but it seems to be a decent product, from what I have read about it. Here is a link to "seacast review and tips".

Plywood can also be used in the transom. I personally am planning on stacking 2 2x8s in my 13ft fiberglass hull. These guys will steer ya in the right direction.

You can see a transom replacement here. Yours should be a lot easier.

If the boat doesn't have a splashwell with a top lip that covers the top edge of the transom, it should be a pretty easy replacement job. Getting the splashwell out of an aluminum boat to get to the transom can be tough. Regardless, try to get the transom out in one piece, or at least the bottom-most part. That will give you a tracing pattern to use if you cut a new one out of wood. I used two pieces of plywood, glued/screwed together with wood grain perpendicular to wood grain for added strength. Seats can be any configuration you like, just make sure you use a durable/thick wood for benches...cypress is real good if you can find it.
