Default "83" 35hp Evinrude/long shaft

Good morning fellow boater's.First post here. O.K This engine was bought on a Boston Whaler from a Yacht club and was supposed to have had it's routine mait.Engine problem's; start's right up smoke's like a banchee, didn't smoke that much when I bought it.Leave's gas and oil slick (not good chum)even after she's off with no fuel pressure.Look's like carb is dumping excess fuel.Put her in gear and ease throttle she pop's right out and I can hear gear's (no low end grease?) Am good with engine's (not boat engine's)so I wanted to get feed back here before I started pullin it apart.A manual would help..

if you are slowly putting it in gear, and hearing the noise. that is wrong. you need to deliberately slam it into gear, quick movement. the shifting gear, is called a clutch dog, very square toothed gear, if the edges get worn from slow shifting, it will want to jump out of gear. i would say it is time to clean and rebuild the carbs, with a rebuilt kit. one per carb.

I tried slamming it too.No good. Little throttle and she's out again.Won't stay in even if I try to hold it there.Tried twice with gentle throttle and she pop's right out again. You can hear and feel it engage but..... It was supposed to have been just serviced and it does have a new prop.Go figure.I don't have a manual for engine yet and dont want to open up a can of night crawler's with this....No lower end gear oil maybe.Could be the dumb *** forgot to fill it..?

get the manual, could be shift linkage is out of whack, or the clutch dog is gone. there is a straight slot screw on the lower side of the foot. loosen and see if there is grease in there, also watch for water, the sealing washers on the drain/fill and vent screws should be replace every time the screw is removed.

you can see complete diagrams and parts list http://www.evinrude.com/en-US/Access...re/?popup=true

order manual at outboardbooks.com

check the grease first, try to find out what is wrong with the shifting. before spending a lot of money.

Oh man ! Took that screw off NO grease,no water,no washer either. Where do I fill it at and will that fix the shifting/drive problem ? I stuck a piece of straw hay about 3" in no grease at all.I picked up a quart yesterday just to have it (preventive main.) is that enough ?

Ewww..that doesn't sound good. The lower unit oil is there to prevent what you are experienceing. Does the screw that you took out have metal filings stuck on the end of it? Can you shine a light in the hole to look or stick a thin magnet in there and see if you have gear chunks?

I filled it and lifted the engine up and down. The oil that weeped back out looked like it had mixed with old oil.But no metal.Didn't add much gear oil, does it take alot?,and is there any way for me to test it before I go out again ? Have the water inlet for hose so I can run the engine . Oh yea carb's apart ,new float, needle and seat.Look's rebuilt. The gas was coming from a badly worn hose. This was definetly a rush to get it out the door service,as for the smoking got to be mix ratio on fuel or carb set too rich.. On my way out for new hose....

i think the damage is done, but you need 80-90 wt lower unit lube, ( walmart). come in tubes or quarts, 2 tubes should do it. you fill from the bottom hole, the top is a vent hole, and fill till it gets to top hole. then put top screw in, and then lower screw. walmart also has a pump you can buy to pump from the quart.

I only see one plug above lower fin.Sqeezed it from quart container into hole and it didn't take much. Dropped float bowl on carb.Won't start now unless I prime it.Something is stuck.Mixed up fresh fuel too.Got real good spark.Once I get it started can I free spin the prop at low idle to check for noise before I drop it back in the water ? Really appreciate all this help I'm gettin ! If I don't get my wife out on that water soon ???????? I think this guy got me on this one. Oh well...

This should give you an idea on where the second plug is on that lower unit, (this is on a 85hp now) but here is a pic. The plug in the first picture is below the prop shaft housing.

and the other plug

Before going crazy unhook control cables and see if it stays in gear.
On drain plugs remove only the 2 big flat head screws.Never the smaller philips head screw.
You'll be better off with a service manual.Sometimes you can find after market manuals at the library. They have them here at iboats among other places. Most manuals have an introduction to 2 stroke outboards.

Make sure you put new washers (or o-rings) on those plugs before you put them back in. You'll leak water into the LU if you don't.

Appreciate all the input. Will pick up the lube pump tomorrow and see how it goes.I had to loosen the starter to get at the carb and now it's not hitting the flywheel right, did I drop a shim or washer that goes between the block and starter ? This engine was supposed to be sound. can O worm's.

Okay... Let's start with the good new's. Fixed carb problem.Run's real nice now.. Bad new's is :small amount of water in gear case with no significant amount of lube. Blew it out and filled with fresh lube. Dropped it in gear at idle with a smooth click.Idled up a bit with no noise or vibration. Do you guy's think I got lucky ? New Q. which angle setting (pin position) do you suggest I run motor at,there are five ? 13.3 Boston Whaler sport. Can anyone tell me what year this motor is ? It is also a 35 Evinrude( not the one I have) E35ELClG. I don't know what that second to last digit is ,an I or an L. This one has a new lower unit and water pump. Look's pretty new..

Well got it out on the water had to hold it in gear.Give a little too much throttle and the engine starts to jump and lift up ? The top fin on the lower end is cracked which would account for the water. No visible metal filings. So to start with the lower casing needs to be replaced. Will I have to rebuild the whole lower end or is it a just a few key parts ?
