Johnson lower unit interchangeability

I have a 2001 50 HP Johnson 4 cycle motor (two cylinder) with a bad lower unit (the gears are shot). What I need to know is what years of Johnson or Evinrude lower units would be compatable with my motor. Also what other Horse Powers might also fit my motor (40, 60, 70 etc). Most of the stuff on ebay is older and I'm guessing that it is not compatable. Thanks for any help you can give me.

The model number is J50PLSIB which is a 2001 model (not a 2005 as I originally thought) power streering and a 20 inch shaft. Sorry for the mix up.

Re: Johnson lower unit interchangeability

That is an awfully new motor to already have blown gears. Was this yours originally or did you recently aquire it? I would also look into WHY the gears are shot already. How do you normally shift? The proper way to shift is to snap the unit into gear as quickly as possible. Some feel that shifting slowwwwly is taking it easy on your gearcase, this is wrong. Slowly shifting the gears causes the machined edges to grind and slam against one another before finally going into gear, hence rounding them off and destroying them. Their wear could also be due to worn shift linkages, or even improper adjustment.
