I have a leaking trim cylinder and need to remove the caps to replace the seals on them. I can't seem to find a spanner to fit. Obviously I can't use heat either. The caps seem really tight. Does anyone have any tips/tricks for getting the cylinders apart ????

By the way, Happy Thanksgiving to all !!!! :D

purchase the correct spanner, and yes heat can be used.
I use oxy/acetelyne on an almost daily basis.
if the spanner doesnt fit correctly the odds increase of stripping out the holes rendering it a real pain to get apart.
most the caps torque to about 80 ftlbs
snap-on and a few others make a universal spanner that works mostly.

Re: Tip on removing trim/tilt cylinder caps

I recently posted the same question. I tried to make my own spanner, but the pins all bent, and it almost messed up the holes to where nothing would get the caps off. I broke down and took it to my mechanic, who has the proper tool--a special socket which costs about $260.00. Using a cheater bar along with his ratchet wrench the caps came off with a loud pop, indicating the torque involved. In conclusion, get the right tool or take it to someone who has one. Good luck!
