My Aftermarket service manual says idle pickup timing should be 7 degrees ATDC, and max advance is 21 degrees BTDC, unless the timing decal states otherwise. Anybody have the real info?

Mercury manual says 22 degrees at cranking speed and 20 at WOT with the nice fuel today I would back it off 2 degrees and work it the rest of the way slowly listening for spark knock and cking the plugs

Laddies, Thanks for the info. Do you have the idle pickup timing spec?

Chris, one of my merc manuals says 5 to 7, the other says 0 to 7 and up till 1991 it was 2 to 9 the roller should just touch the mark we will play with that point as it will help on any flat spots on acceration and won't do engine damage like max. spark could

Laddies, Thanks for the info, is the idle timing really After TDC? My inline was 3-4 degrees BTDC, amd I guess I expected the idle pickup on the V6 to be BTDC as well.

On the V6's, idle timing is after TDC. Idle pickup sets the timing where the carbs start to open. Actual idle timing is done in the water in gear. It will vary from engine to engine.

If you go through the link n sync procedure religeously, it'll be close if it's otherwise reasonably healthy. (compression, leak down, spark, etc.)

hope it helps
John
