Will I be safe to only replace the impeller or should I get the whole kit? I asked the guy for the water pump and he acted like all I needed was the impeller itself.

I normally get the whole kit if I haven't changed it on the engine in question before. I have found melted housings, grooved out pump cups, ect. Best to have all the parts to do a complete job, in my humble opinion.

Like guy said , it cant hurt to have the parts, especially if the dealer is a distance away. But you will know for sure once you dismantle, if it is scored or grooved at all, it will affect the performance of the impeller, and should be changed.
