Didn't get any bites in the prop forum and thought I would try over here. If it gets moved I'm sorry, just need to find this out and I know I'll get an answer in this thread. I know it comes down to what it does on the water but I wanted the pros opinon on where to start or if anyone has this setup. I have an 83 Ranger 330V, 1978 Johnson 140 V4, and a 6" manual jackplate...I'm going to get this setup on the water for testing next week. it has the original aluminum prop on it. It has serial numbers but no number that would indicate prop pitch. The numbers are as follows... 5347 4098 3225...these numbers are not together...they are all separate. the first two are on the same side and the the 3225 is alone. I'm wanting to have WOT at around 5400 to 5800. I know I'll play with the jackplate but I'm going to start with cavitation plate level with lowest pad. I'm thinking a 19 to 21 degree pitch will be close. I'm really wondering about diameter..I've always known about pitch..what does the diameter change?? I know the larger prop will probably get more bite but will have more resistance in the water. What do you guys think? Anyone have a setup like this?? I am looking for all around speed and planing as in the summer I may pull a tube or knee board. Two props will probably be the way to go. Thanks!

I would also keep in mind the '78 140 is the same as a post 1985 115hp.
Personally, I think a good (Read high quality) 19P is going to be your best speed prop in the correct RPM range due to the fact you will be limited on heigth by water pick-up.
Keep 5800 as your target RPM.
With 6" set-back and depending on if you have a step, I would start with the AV plate 1-1/2" above pad bottom...should be no reason to go any lower. I would also recommend a water pressure gauge if you will be using a Plate.

Re: 1978 johnson 140 & Ranger 330V

thanks guys...walleye to do you think I need a cupped prop?? The 19 I have on my 1150 without jackplate on the 330v tends to blow out on plane in the turns. I plan on tapping the top of the heads...like the faq..I'm going to tap both heads...one will be for the pee hole and the other will be for the water psi gauge.
