1998 force merc 2 stroke. motor trims up but not down.Could the motor have crapped the bed . took off top cowl followed the wire from pump found either 2 solenoids or relays not sure could the one that controls down trim failed. can it be replaced or do i have to replace everything. This is my 1st boat so could really use some knowledge from someone who knows. If it is the solenoids what is the average cost. 40HP

Re: problems with trim

Try swapping the solenoids to see if that is the problem. They are cheap.

Shannon, Take a look at the exploded parts diagrams for your motor on www.dougrussell.com. Merc changed from two solenoids and a three wire motor to a two relay, two wire motor. I am not sure of the timeframe of the change.

If you have the two solenoids, three wire motor, you can jumper the sloenoids to see if the motor is bad or the solenoid or switch is bad. Green is the down wire, and you need to have voltage on the green and black wires, for the motor to run "down". Blue is the up wire. You need to have voltage on the blue and black wires to have the motor run "up"

Re: problems with trim

It could also just be the trim switch in your controller. But you need to check at the motor (the solenoids) first.

Well went on that web site maybe i'm not looking in the right section. Wish I had pics so you could see what I mean anyways , I've looked at power trim solenoids some other site doesn't look like the part.mine have as you said green and blue wires. They look like relays like you said. Now if you know of a site where I can go. I have all part #'s so I can go by stock #'s would be a great help man. thanks again

Re: problems with trim

Admiral, thanks for the help found what i needed. Now i'll get the part see if that is it or not and work my way back from there. Hopefully it is just the relay and not the whole harness. Big jump in price 14.00-- 120.00 crazy but thats the way engines go. Now if it was a 68 camaro no problem, again thanks for all your help safe journey 01. By the way 40hp turns out to be force engine chrysler product then merc
