Crankcase Cover Gasket Strip - Which way does it install? 1985 75 HP

The cork gasket strip used to seal the crankcase halves is rectangular. Should this lay in the groove with the wider or narrower side facing up? The strip has adhesive on the narrow side.

Sticky side to the bottom of the groove
