Default Vintage Evinrude paint avail.??

Greetings,
I have been suffering from "vintagemotoritis" lately, and in the thick of rebuilding a few motors. I have been wanting to squirt my hard work and can't seem to find those vintage colors! There is too much time & sweat invested to settle for paints that don't match from using 'close-enough' sprays.

Tempo used to make them. Where can I get them? Are there any companies out there still making the origional paints? What are the rebuilders doing? Color matching...any ideas..?

Peter McDowell at nymarine.ca His paints are 100% exact correct color. I tried to get him to mix a "good enough" where he didn't stock the right stuff and he wouldn't do it. He has decals too.

I'll have to look him up. I have heard of stores, paint companies, and others, taking a computer scan and can load up in spray cans for you, but not sure who does that exactly. I am hopeful that someone has heard of the procedure.

I figure that if you're in it that deep, you might as well go all the way and do it right! Even those acrylic clear coats as the final add depth...

I've used his paint too. It's very good. His decals are the best I've found. One thing I've noticed....If you buy spray cans they're going to hit you for a $35 charge at the border---some kind of hazardous material crap. Also, thanks to our wonderful homeland security dept. it's taking 3 weeks to get across the border so be prepared to wait. You can get Mr. McDonald on the phone and he's very helpful. A good person to do business with.
You can also get on the aomci.org website and they have a list of common spray paint colors you can get at an automotive store that are close to original. I found them helpful.
Good luck and post some pics when you finish 'em,
JBJennings

I'll see if I can find the list and post the address or copy and paste. It's not for all colors but helpful for a few.

Harbor Freight offers a REUSABLE/REFILLABLE AEROSOL SPRAY CAN item 1102-3VGA that will make the job affordable and less hassle if and when you find the paint. I'm still looking for a source for the early 70's Evinrude paints. Anybody know where the can be found?

Well, if you go to the "ask a member" section of the AOMCI site, you can do a "find" search and type in (close paint color) and get this list. Here it is if I can get the attachment to work. I couldn't save it in a format that you could see, will try again to get address.

Well here is the address I was on, it was at the bottom of the page. I put it in quotes so take 'em off. Hope it works, it's a handy list. I'm going to try to become a member myself pretty soon.

I have used NYmarine for the holiday bronze on my 57s.Pete came with lots of recommendations from the AOMCI of which I am a member. He is one of the very few people who posses the old Tempo color schemes.
You must realize that if you repaint, you must do the entire thing because it is very hard to match faded paints online.

I sprayed all but the wrap around tank on my lightwin 3hp (have to fair out some dents) with the aftermarket spray from West Marine. It is much lighter than origional, and says that it is "close to origional", however, I'll never do that again. You really can't get the same appreciation than from the original paint. It is really worth the $$ $$!

Try Tower Paint & Design Center in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.

The motor pictured below was painted with their paint about five years ago and was used extensively, with few attempts to keep the paint clean, etc. I was painting the motor to match a freshly painted '69 6hp and Bombardier changed paint suppliers in the middle of the project. The new version of the '69 color wasn't even close to the old version so I was in a minor jam. The white paint on the hood is garden variety hardware store paint, but the green is from Tower. I mailed them a part off of the first motor and they matched it, made me several spray cans of the mix and sent the paint to me, along with the part. The only thing that I did that might be more than some (but certainly not all) people is that I disassembled the motor, tank stripped the parts, primed them and then painted and baked the top coats.

Tower Paint also has all the OMC paint codes and will mix paint for you based upon those codes.
