Halloween ghost in my tach?

hey all!

I have a tach (Faria) which seems to have a free spirit or ghost inside-
it is usually fairly accurate as far as I can tell, but some times, like today, the needle was bouncing around like it had a life of it`s own.
Is it because the boat is bouncing around in the water?
How critical is it to have the tach anyway?
Just wondering..........
Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

Ours goes wonky like that when it's humid. Once it warms up and dries out it's fine.

My experience with tachs is that they are prone to internal corrosion and dirty contacts. When this happens, they get wonky like you're describing.

Nine out of ten times, the fix is simple. On the back there will be a switch or knob. Typically there will be the numbers 4-6-8 by it. The numbers correspond with the number of cylinders of the motor. move the switch or knob around to clean the contacts up a little and set it back to the right setting. It should do the trick for a while at least.

Farias are known for this. Rap on it with your knuckles.
