Problem dropping lower unit Mercury 1998 25 hp nontiller

I need to change the impeller. I removed the 4 bolts and the lower unit came out about 2 inches. There is a metal rod that has a rubber boot on it. I think it is the shift rod. How do I disconnect the shift rod so that I can replace the impeller?

it unhooks from up top if its electric start you need to remove the starter to get to the clip

I took the starter off. It made it easier to access. I could lift the "gatehook" retainer. However, the plastic knob would not come off. Do I remove it or the metal pin?

SELOC did not help at all.

I'm going to try again tomorrow.
