seriously considering a 02 Capri 175...advice please

my only real concern is the powerplant being the 3.0L and maybe being underpowered. I have a young family and this is our first boat....kids are young (2 and 5) so they would be tubing with an adult, and probably one or two adults in the boat with a couple of kids.
I guess what i am hoping for is some practical advice and suggestions based on your experience.

Being it's your 1st boat, and only a 17.5ft boat with a 3.0 (135-140hp motor) you should be fine! Especially if you're not going to overload it with people, & gear. You may have to switch props to one with less pitch if you start to load it up, but that's not hard, nor does it take long to do, once you learn how. Plus an extra prop is not that expensive, and never a bad idea to have aboard. You will also be pleased that this is one of the most economical, carefree, combo's around,,, as long as you keep up with regular maintenance.

I believe the current owner has put a different four blade prop on it, which i do believe is not stock...

MikDee is absolutely correct!

Make sure that your prop gets you into the WOT (wide open throttle) range as specified in the manual. What this means is when the boat is being driven at WOT the RPM of the engine should be in th required range. Usually 4600 - 4800 RPM.

This is VERY important for engine life.

As MikDee also states, as the boat gets more loaded, expect the RPM to lower and the need for a lower pitch prop.

I have my regular prop for cruising around and when my daughter want to take all ger friends out tubing then I have a lower pitched prop that she must put on.

I have a 99 Capri 175 w/ 3.0 and Alpha. Great boat and plenty of power. I have pulled 2 adults on a tube and had 5 adults in the boat. I can do 48 MPH when i am alone on glass in the morning. We love our boat and the fuel economy is AWESOME. I can go two days on the lake on a tank of fuel. 25 gallons i think.

Have to agree with the others. We have the 3.0l in our Capri, no problem towing tubes with that sort of load. Got mine up to 42 on glass with 2 on board. If full of adults someone will have to shift forward to get on the plane a bit faster, but once up will keep going. Great fuel economy. Think it makes a great starter boat for a family.
