83 Johnson 115hp controls question

Hello,
Need to replace the controls on a project I am starting. Does anyone know what range of years and motor sizes I can use on this motor? Also, are the Evinrude and Johnson controls interchangable?

Thats what I thought. I am really trying to figure out the year range that will work so I can widen my search for a used set of controls.

The unts have slight modifications in different years in such things as the warning horns. Otherwise they crossover well from 1978 through at least the early 1990's. I would try to find one as new as possible, then check the diagram for that year against your model.

The "red plug" control boxes are the same up thru 1995. If you have power trim, be sure to get a box that has the trim switch in the handle-not all do.

The 83 115 will have a red cannon plug on the engine wiring harness. Any E / J / OMC control that has a harness with a red plug will work. Basically from 1973 to 1995. 1996 & newer will work with the correct adaptors.

Thanks Dhadley, realized what the 'red plug' meant after doing some research (hate asking a question before I research it!), but you gave me great info about the compatability.
