Evinrude tilt and trim: 115 hp, 1992

I am trying to diagnose my problem. The tilt and trim has been sporatic for a while: I would have to press the button multiple times before it would engage, then it would work fine for the day. Most recently though, it has stopped working altogether.

Using the manual, all the voltages and tests check out. I am wondering if the electric motor itself could have a flat spot in the armiture? Shouldn't the motor run if I apply 12V directly to the leads? (Because it does not.)

Is applying power directly to the leads of the motor the way to see if it runs or not?

Thanks,

Steve

It should definately run when wired directly to a 12 V source. However, pull the motor off of the manifold first and wire it again directly to a 12 V source. If it still does not run, replace the motor , if it now runs, your pump needs to be checked. If your motor is shot it needs either a rebuild or a new motor altogether, depending on the age of it and its condition. Look into a small motor repair shop or alternator/starter repair shop first if you dont want to get into it yourself, they can sometimes be rebuilt for as little as 20 bucks for minor repairs. If you have a manual, it is not that difficult however. If you want a completely rebuilt one, check out this website, Good luck.

Thanks, I will pull it all the way off and see how it works. I am guessing it is going to be the motor based on how tempermental it was working up to fully quiting.

I agree, but cant hurt to cover your bases before you purchase a new motor when it could be the pump. Pump would be a cheaper fix. Welcome to iboats.
