2002 Mariner, 60 hp 4 cyl 4stroke. I had to replace forward and pinion gear due to pitting.also replaced carrier brg.and all seals in the lower unit. When i opened the L/U it had no shims except one on the drive shaft just below the
water pump base.
Are the shimms and backlash adjustments possible without a shop full of Merc
tools, if so i would really appreciate the info. I have the seloc manual but it doesnt read like a do it yourself project

You don't need to reshim if you are changing gears or bearings they are + or - .002. then shimming your actually shimming the case to fit the gears and bearing so just reinstall the shims you take out and you should be fine

i understand , install it with the shims that came out of it.
Does this apply to the gear backlash?

Yes. as long as you don't change a housing you should never have to reshim, just be carefull to keep all shims in the right position
