Arrow 1971 Evinrude Parts/2nd Motor

hello:

i have a 1971 evinrude 85hp starflight electric shift. i am thinking of sourcing an additional engine for parts, etc. i have located a 1971 100hp evinrude v4 in running condition, good compression, but bogs at high speed and wont shift. is this a good 2nd engine for parts, electrics etc? is this 100hp in the same block family as my 85hp evinrude?

that aside, what would be the year series that would supply me with starter, power packs, coils, heads, thermostats, etc? like for example... 1970 - 1979 all v4 engines, piston size aside. also, is a johnson v4 of same vintage a good parts engine? do they use the same parts?

i am also interested if i do acquire the 100hp evinrude to get it running right for use. any thots as to why it would run and bog on high speed throttle settings and is the 100hp also an electric shift for 1971?

any help or advice is appreciated.

regards
lakester

I do not know much about out boards but I am a reader. I have the same motor as you, 1970 85hp rude so I have been reading up on it. From what I understand 1969 thru 1972 or all the same. Also the parts, except for the powerhead, or the same, of course the experts in here know more than I do.

I know I would like to buy a second motor, just for cheap parts.

my suggestion would be go to "http://www.evinrude.com/en-US/Accessories/Literature/?popup=true" look up the motors, compare part #s, then go to ishopmarine, enter numbers, see if they come up with the same #, as a lot of parts have superceded #s. that's the way to know for sure.

First, you have to get your ducks all in a row. There is no such thing as a 1971 85hp Evinrude, so it's kind of hard to compare.

At least back in that era, Evinrudes and Johnsons were pretty much the same. They had different hoods and remote controls.

hello,

thanks for the ideas.

"First, you have to get your ducks all in a row. There is no such thing as a 1971 85hp Evinrude, so it's kind of hard to compare." sez: FR

could u please explain more? i have the 1971 evinrude service manual for my engine. it says in bold print on the front cover it is for:

1971 Evinrude Starfliight 85 HP, model 85193. so, why do u say it tain't so?

t's daddy, i read in one of ur posts where u mentioned evinrude went to a mechanical/electric shift in 1973. i think u said it ran until 1978. when in 1979 they went to all mechanical shift. do you know if the 1968's were electrical solenoid shift, too?

the idea of x-referring the part #s on the two engines is a good idea.

regards,

lakester

68-72 were hydro electric shift, 73-77 were assisted mechanical shift. still use the oil to shift. 78 up are mechanical shift. like is said cross ref parts.

Sorry, my mistake. I had the original Evinrude Sales Brochure in my hand when I wrote that. However, it was a '72 brochure. My bad.

hello fr,

since u had the 72 sales brochure in hand, r u saying the 85 hp evinrude was not an engine hp option in 72? would u mind posting what the options were from 60 hp and up in 1972?

thanks!

Sorry, I am getting confuseder and confuseder. Here is the 1971 brochure that I was looking at. Clearly no 85hp there. However, I do concede that there is a 1971 85 listed in my other stuff.
To answer other questions, the motors are pretty similar. Differences to look for would be bore size, carburetor size, Cylinder heads and gaskets, and probably ignition systems. I would expect to find the CD ignition with points in the 85/100 and breakerless CD in the 125.

You might also want to considere surfing the auction sites for parts that are specificlly for your year/model. Picking up a parts motor here and there can be fine but you can go the other route pretty effectively too.
