I purchased a 1985 25 horsepower 2 stroke manual start evinrude long shaft.
For some reason, I cannot get it to plane my boat 14ft jon boat.
After I start it and try to take off, it is like it is sucking for air (& power). It is not the fuel filter, that is new. Someone said to put a new power pack in it.
Question, if the power pack is bad, what will it do to the performance?
I had new plugs in it and after only trying to run it for 4 minutes, I gave up. Went back home, pulled the plugs and they were black as the ace of spades! They were brand new prior to this outing, if anyone can give me some guidance, I would appreciate it.
I am not very mechanical, but my friend is and I am trying to be (forced too)!
Re: Help with 25 horsepower Evinrude (Power Pack)??
I seriously would question whether it is the power pack....but it could be. If it is the pack, it will be running on one cylinder.....which it could be. First thing you need to do is check the basics. What is the compression? Will it produce a spark across a 7/16" gap on both plug wires? If it will do that, it isn't the pack.
Re: Help with 25 horsepower Evinrude (Power Pack)??
If you put new plugs into the motor and after a short duration, both were black, I would think it would not be a power pack. I would say that you have a fuel problem, such as the motor is running too rich.
Re: Help with 25 horsepower Evinrude (Power Pack)??
Had the motor been in use much prior to your purchasing it, or had it been sitting for months/years? It's entirely likely that the carb is gunked/gummed up. As Frank noted, check the basics and let us know what you find, otherwise we're just shooting in the dark...

Re: Help with 25 horsepower Evinrude (Power Pack)??
if both plugs were black it was firing. if one wasn't firing it would have been wet. sounds like a carb cleaning and rebuild, and a decarb, may be a link n sinc.
we all need to support iboats marine store when ever possible. you get, competitive prices. fast shipping, top notch customer service. also it provides us, this great FREE forum.
Re: Help with 25 horsepower Evinrude (Power Pack)??
Compression test first! No use throwing time and $ replacing good parts. Search the posts for compression test and you'll be up to speed on what to look for. If compression is good then continue. If she's firing on both cyl's at idle, it's probably not the PP. To check this, first confirm the plugs are gapped at .030, run motor at semi-high idle and pull top spark plug boot off plug (w/rubber coated pliers). It should continue to run, but at like half the rpm's. Do the same w/lower plug boot. If one doesn't change rpm, that plug isn't firing. Check spark on that wire. If no spark, at that point it could be a pp, but coil, plug wire, or just a bad plug could do it. If everything was fine w/this test, you probably have a gummed up carb. Get a carb kit (they're like $20) and install it (again, search forums for advice). After you disassemble the carb, let it soak in solvent and blow out w/compressed air to clear all passages. Don't worry, if it has adequate compression, it will plane out your jon boat once the issue is resolved. Good luck!
Re: Help with 25 horsepower Evinrude (Power Pack)??
Thanks guys!
Compression is perfect and no problems there, thank God!
The guy who I bought if from owned a carb shop and is willing to help me. He told me that he got the motor from an older man who let it sit it his garage for 10 years.
One questions, if I had a power pack problem, what do I look for?
Re: Help with 25 horsepower Evinrude (Power Pack)??
Hmmmmmmm, do you sell Power Packs or something lol. Power Pack failure would lead to poor performance, due to loss of spark, or a rough running engine due a faulty isolation diode in the power pack. They can be easily checked with an ohmmeter set to high ohms scale if you are truly worried. But as stated, Im sure that carb just needs a good bath.
Re: Help with 25 horsepower Evinrude (Power Pack)??
No, I do not sell powerpacks. I am a pastor, who could not afford a new engine and was forced to buy a used 1985 2 stroke.
The guy who sold it to me has committeed to help me fix it, and he thinks it is a powerpack. I do not not what the problem is, but he said that we will find it and fix it.
We will find out, but I am thankful for everyones posts! I am thankful that I have found this forum and all of you who have helped me.
