G'day, I have the chance to get a Mariner 9.9hp really cheap, the only problem is that it was used on a yacht and had an extra long leg (25inches)fitted when purchased. I want to use it on my 12ft runabout which only has a short transom (15 inches). My question is....how easy is it to shorten the shaft and do you need to buy new centre shafts that go to the gearbox or can they just be cut and resplined...any idea on the cost of having this done?.... Or...can I extend the height of my transom with something like wood and support braces to get the prop sitting at the right height? I've seen the transom jacks but they seem very expensive considering it's just a small boat with a small 4stroke engine...any ideas?
