Why is there never enough time to do it right the first time,
But always enough time to do it again?
Please, NO PM's (Private Messages) regarding boat/engine problems.
That is what these forums are for.
Only forum/moderator issues will be answered in PM's.
The new gearbox that came out in about '90 gives you access to all 5. Prior to that, in that hp range, they hid one under the trim tab and to get at it you had to remove it.
I have the same motor, and this winter I will be also changing the water pump, so this thread is of interest to me. I have the Mercury repair manual and have been doing some reading, but I have never attempted to do the repair. Still getting my nerve up.
I did notice that on the re-install that they call for a small bead #116 RTV 587 Silicone Sealer located by the water pump cover assembly. Again, I am no expert, (and waiting for the pros to jump in ) but is it possible that this old silicone is holding this from dropping down. Maybe a light tap with a piece of wood, and it will drop.
The only thing in there is the splined drive shaft, splined shift shaft, and a water tube from the water pump....plus a small water pickup hose on some engines.
Probably the drive shaft is stuck and needs some coaxing. Need to be careful banging on things as the horizontal alum parts are brittle and can be bent or broken off by banging on them.
Might go to the archives and look up some successful tricks others have tried. Might give "Laddies" a PM as he used to be a Merc mechanic and should know.
