Default 1998 Yamaha 80 HP alarm and forward gear

Put my 98 Yam in the water this weekend. Launched fine and ran about 500 yards to dock. Alarm came on. Checked water pisser and good stream coming out. Cranked up put in gear will not get going. Shut down and loaded up. While on the trailer if you put it in reverse you can feel it go in gear and all appears well. When you put it in Neutral the prop spins without resistance as it should. When you put it in forward the prop still turns and you hear a clicking sound as if something is not meshing up. What do I appear to have ....linkage problem. Pulling cowling I saw several big dirt dobber nest that evidently came loose or were knocked loose by the linkage....could this have caused my problem. I am an amateur when it comes to Yamaha so be gentle and treat me like a baby please........I dont know much about Yamahas. What should I do first and how to go about it would help very much. Thanks

Thanks for the reply rodbolt.
This is a 2 cycle 1998 80 HP yamaha. It is not oil injected one must mix the oil with the gas. I can give you serial numbers and model numbers if you need them to help me out. Thanks for the info on the prop. It does exactly what you said.....locks in one direction and ratchets in the other. Good to know that I dont have a lower unit problem. What do you recommend as a starting point to find the source of the overheat beeper? My first thoughs are that today I will hook up the muffs to it and crank it up and see if it will flush out and see if the overheat beeper comes on. I will do this and report back with my findings. Thanks for your assist. fishnpick

Hooked up to muffs. Runs fine. Shifts fine. Pumping no water. I assume that the water path is clogged somewhere or the water pump is gone. It has never has a water pump put in perhaps its time???????? How can one flush the path?????

Took the lower screens off and took the pisser hose off. Using compressed air I blew out the house and blew through the water chamber and out the lower screen. Did the same from the bottom up....get air from the piss hole and when you blow from the piss hole to the lower screen you get air........I can only assume that the water pump is gone. Serial and model look like this.. Yamaha C80TLRV
6HO L 351594
W Anyone got a link to detailed instruction as to changing the water pump. I have changed them on Mercs and Rudes but this is my first Yamaha....is it the same or about the same procedure...???Thanks for any replies....

Replaced water pump impeller and plate...plate was good but shows some wear so I replaced while in it. Cleaned out dirt dobbers and opened all passages. Soaked and cleaned carbs while I had it at the house. It purrs like a new born kitten. Took to lake and it runs out at all speed and gets to plane quickly and easily......its back to its old self. Thanks for the input.....great site and easy to use site. fishnpick.....
