I need help on how to replace tilt lever & shaft on 1977 85hp Johnson

I could use some advice ! My tilt and run lever is broken on my 77 85 hp engine. I bought a used one and I bought a Johnson service manual for that year engine which covers 85hp and 115 hp engine. The manual only covers power tilt and trim.I have the engine proped in the tilt position but the set screw that needs to be removed on the end of the shaft is not accesable. What do I have to do to remove old shaft and install the new one. Iam stumped on this job and need help. Any advice would help Thanks

Could you post a pic, Im not quite sure what set screw you are referring to.

Hi, Here are the pics.The set screw is pointed up so there is no room to get acess with a screw driver.I am not sure if I remove pin in latch assembly where two heavy springs are attached that it will let me remove heavy wire linkage and then allow me to rotate shaft and remove screw.But then how do you re assemble? I hope I did the pictures right.Thanks Dave

Pic # 3 new shaft, The set screw is on the right and when loosened you can remove the bracket from the shaft and should be able to remove shaft from motor bracket.

removing the cotter pin will not allow it to spin? Theres always a grinderrrrrr

I don't understand the problem. Can't you simply rotate the handle/shaft so the screw points down?

So as to not appear to be a complete dummy, I just now went out and looked at my motor (different horsepower) and that's the way it is. Rotated to the tilt position, the screw points up. Rotate it to the run position and the screw points down.

The problem is the tilt lever on the moter is broke off and can't be rotated to get acess to set screw. Sorry for sounding like a dummy.

Then can't you rotate it by poking at it from the inner end?

Maybe. That might be why it's broken. Somebody tried to force it. Golly, don't know what to tell you now.

Following up, after thinking about it for a minute, there is a lot of tension on that thing from the lockdown mechanism, which might make it difficult to rotate the shaft with such a small lever.

Try relieving the spring pressure by prying upward on the lockdown hooks mechanism.

Hi FR, I just thought I would let you know I got the screw off of the tilt lever. I had my brother hold pressure on locking clamp and I was able to get in there and push on the bracket to rotate shaft and gain acess to set screw and remove it. Thanks for your help:
