Hi all, recently purchased a used boat and I am looking at purchasing some manuals for the motors, but I am unsure what the power head true hp is. The gentleman I bought the boat off said it was a factory 50 jet (the cowling is labelled 50 jet drive) and that the power head was about a 70 hp, is this right? A lot of the manuals I see advertised do not reference a 50 jet drive, does the 2 hp - 70 hp cover my motor?

Look at the model number on the motor. The horsepower will be followed by a letter J, indicating the jet drive. The actual horsepower should be the only number in the model number:

50 HP Jet motors were made at least through 1997 [the 1997 model # is J50JEU] so if it is a 50 you could use that year's manual.

Like ezeke said, the actual model number tag should indicate which powerhead is involved.

What your friend told you is also true- that if an engine is labeled "XX Jet" the actual powerhead HP is undoubtedly quite a bit higher - you lose about 30 percent w/ a jet compared to a prop. 70 hp would put out 50 with a jet.

Just fwiw: aftermarket jet engines are of course labeled with the original HP as if it were running a prop. If the jet is installed in the factory, the cowling labeling indicates actual HP delivered at the nozzle.
