The Rapido engine comes with a new oil pump w/o the pick -up tube/screen.....the srceen is tack welded on my original pump (which Raul says isn't a badd idea).........when I install a new one should I bother securing it or just press it in?

Re: Oil Pump Pick-up

braze it or at a minimum epoxy it. I have seen a few fall out, one on a pair of crusaders with less than 20 hours.
crusader did not pay. says it was not their issue.
was a bumer deal.
we always welded/epoxied or otherwise physically secured the pipe to pump.
however if you use the correct installation tool and its a decent press fit it should work.

On the oil pump I`d make sure it`s a "standard" pump and not a "hi-volume"
Also had a engine lose a pickup tube .I weld/braze the tube in place.

Re: Oil Pump Pick-up

I just pressed mine into my rapido block.

It took two guys 10 minutes to do it... I don't think I could get it out if I wanted to.

The pumps rapido sent are standard, as far as I can tell.

It's not worth the gamble Tony for what a little epoxy or a spot weld cost. I too have seen them in the oil pan on a couple of occasions, never from the factory, both were on remand engines. :(

Just curious, what's wrong with a high volume pump?

Re: Oil Pump Pick-up

I purchased the pick-up tube tonight a "pressed" it in............there's no way this is coming loose........don't see a need for any epoxy or welding..........

Going to commence assembly tommorrow from the bottom up............

That pressed fit sounds adequate. The TIG or MIG spot weld sounds good also. It has been my experience with any epoxy to metal reinforcement or repair that meticulous surface prep is mandatory. If one reads any epoxy product data sheet it will talk about minimum cleanliness and surface profile. I think the chemical fix is WAY to much work for this job.

For the piece of mind, I would still tack it in place. That way you know it will never fall out. There is a fair bit of vibration going through that engine and a few have seen them fall out. Just my $0.02.

Have a great day,

Rob.

Re: Oil Pump Pick-up

For MikDee,
With a "hi-vol" pump you have to increase the volumn of the oil pan.
standard is 4 maybe 5 qts.The motor needs oil pumped from the pan to the engine to work properly, excess oil drips back to the pan to be re-pumped.
A hi-vol pump will drain the oil pan of all the oil and then you will hear some not so funny knocking sounds from a lack of oil supply. At the very least a 10-12 pan to contain enough oil to prevent a failure. Chevy sb`s will almost run forever with 35lbs of oil pressure.
