Is it possible to damage the ignition trigger or any other engine electrical
component by leaving the key switch on for very extended time?

Unlikely. With the key switch on, the ground wire to the power packs is open. That's it. No ignition electricity is generated till the flywheel turns. The battery is only used for starting, not ignition.
