1981 9.9 johnson J10CID Hard Throttle

This outboard runs great except for one problem. The twist throttle is so difficult that I can only hold it for speed for five minutes before I must let go and the it just drops to idle. The problem is not in the tiller handle, its in the main body. Does it just need lubing? Any Suggestions?

So, what happens if you turn it loose? Does it turn itself off? That would be something is dragging against the flywheel. Probably the stator/coil. You'll have to remove the flywheel for a look-see.

The motor doesn't turn off, it just drops to idle
