The power tilt leaks down one inch in ten minutes eventually reaching the end of its travel.can anyone help with this problem?
Engine is 1988 evinrude 40 hp Prestolite tilt unit omc accessorie. There is no leakage on the outside of it,and the reservoir was about an ounce of fluid over full when I released the fill plug.

Reason: added information
Well then check the level of the oil first. If it is not topped up, top it up, cycle the motor 5 to 6 times, top it up again, cycle it 5 to 6 times, then check it again. It is self bleeding. There may be an internal valve problem, but want to check this along with the o rings first. And yes, the oil, o rings, etc are all readily available parts.
Thanks for the info. Did the Cycling routine last summer , did not help. are there valves in the piston,or just the manual release screw? I have never seen a parts break down of this unit.
FIrst thing that you should do is order yourself a manual, they will honestly pay for themselves a million times over. Here is the parts break down though. Or you can go to this link and follow it for yourself, it will itemize all the parts for you. After the link, click on Find Evinrude Engine Diagrams, then top left corner click on Evinrude, then GO, then 1988, then 40hp, then your model number, then power tilt and trim. Good luck.
Thanks for your reponse. I have the OMC shop manual, but it only shows the power trim and tilt. I have power tilt only. But maybe the piston O rings are the same.
Thanks for responding. It is not the tilt aid cyl I am refering to. What I have Is an OMC accessorie Power Tilt Unit 12V Electro hydraulic. I dont have the part no. with me right now. They are described in the Accessories cataloge,The cataloge I had was about 1989.
