I have an Evinrude 140 #E140TLCOA that I have been told is a 1985....but as I look at different parts and stuff I see that there are 90 degree ones 60 degree ones some called loopers and some called ficht???? in addition there appears to be v4's with "big" gearcases........how do you figure out what motor you have is and what, if any, parts are interchangeable....thanks for any help

They didn't make ficht in '85, so yours is a loop charged (looper) or a cross flow. Those terms refer to two different ways the engine takes in fuel and exhausts. Some people seem to prefer loopers, but I've never read anything that says the crossflow is "bad", just a different design.

90 vs 60 degree refers to the angle of the cylinder banks. You should be able to tell pretty readily by looking at it. The 60 degree bank is spread out more than 90. Again, I've never read anything definitive that one is distinctly "better" than the other.

Your model number tells you a lot about the engine (but not whether its a looper or cross flow or 60 or 90) There's a lot of guides to this, you can web search. One example: http://www.usboatsupply.com/pdf/EJ/ModelNumberRefGuid2005.pdf

Yours is an evinrude 140 hp (E140) with electric start, trim/tilt and 20" shaft (TL), made in '85 (CO). Like I said, you should be able to tell if it's 90 or 60. Hopefully someone will be able to advise you whether it's a loop charged or cross flow.

Just the opposite. The 90 degree is spread out more. They didn't make a 60 degree in 85 or a crossflow so yours is a 90 degree looper.

The 1985 140 is a 90* looper and should have the larger V6 style gearcase (not the same as a V6 but the same size). The 1984 140 is a 90* crossflow and was rated as 115 in 1985. The 60* V4 loopers didn't come along until 1995. V4 direct fuel injection (Ficht) came along in 2000.

I used this site to verify my motor's year http://www.marinshopen.se/guide/guide.htm

It might come in handy for someone else as well. Sometimes you can get some of us that may can tell about what the motor's year is just buy looking at the motor and the color of the motor. I'm slowly learning.

Now I am confused. I thought my 1985 Johnson was a 60 degree looper !!! it also has a 13 spline prop shaft which I bekieve makes it not a V6 gearcase. Going to get some photos of it out here. It also seems to have a narrower motor hood than earlier models. I thought it was because it had a lesser angled "V" on the cylinder banks !!
Shows what I know eh !!!! LOL

Correct. The 13 spline is a V4 unit. But that could have been changed thru the years too. Not a big deal. When you get the pics take a look at the tab on the head gasket at the top. Take note if it's straight across or has a "U" shape cut out.
