if i put desiel or mineral spirits in the bottom end of my 1968 55 evinrude model#55873r do ifill it up and run it or what does anyone suggest

DO NOT RUN IT!

It's a solvent to be flushed through the system and drained. Full, half full, whatever you want. Enough to clean out any leftover sludge.

i usually fill it, then turn the prop shaft several times. let it sit. the turn again, then drain. works great if you have had water intrusion, and have milk shake in the lower.

We've used mineral spirits on those older units and let it run for a minute or so. No more than 2 minutes though. Running it let the solvent go thru the pump and help clean crud from that screen. If the plunger was starting to stick it would help sometimes shift it a few times. On the newer mechanical shift there's no reason to shift it.

And then replace with a good 80 or 90 weight lower unit gear lube or the Hi Vis OMC stuff which I like to use. They also sell synthetic LU oil which is supposed to be pretty good.

Gotta be careful though since you're running it w/o lube. I didn't want to confuse the issue with the poster who was eagerly waiting to finish up a job.

Flush it though this time. Maybe handcrank next time, or run it briefly for a minute or so.

I hope you remembered to take the mineral spirits out right??? lol ;)

Seriously though, I hope you replaced the vent and drain gaskets after filling with new lube, that is the number one spot for water intrusion and a likely candidate if that was the case.
