I was told my job has been eliminated today. They want me to work the next two weeks to transfer my duties to other people.

I am looking on the bright side. The beer that I jsut opened is a really good beer.

It is probably for the best. I just wish my house was sold.

Unless there was some benefit to you, for sticking around, I'd tell them to stuff it.

Re: My job was eliminated today

Thanks everyone. My job was consulting with clients on their software licensing and maintenance renewals for other manufacturers. It looks like my company will not be selling licensing for our major vendor any more.

I have been with this company for 16 years. During those 16 years, I held a lot of different positions including managing multiple departments at a time. I got a lot of the troubled departments to turn around in the past. I was the last of the old managers that was still with the company.

I still have not seen if they will give me a severence package. I believe I will find out tomorrow.

I'm with Boomyal. Unless they give something you can't refuse, just leave. Their reward for 16 years of loyalty and good work is the sack?! I wouldn't help transfer duties to anyone...

If you plan to use them as a referance {which I would after all that in 16 years} I would follow through with what ever they want and kiss their b-hinds because you never know. They might need you back in a couple of weeks or dicide they let the wrong person go and come looking for you. I've had jobs that they escorted me off the property by the time I got done telling them where to put their job and I've had others that wished they didn't have to let me go but had to because of money. If what you said is true {and I have no reason to not belive you}, I don't think they are going to throw away your phone number. Its your life and up to you to decide...ANIMAL ;) P.S. I always looked at it as a chance to move on and up. Enjoy your beer it might be the last for a while.

May be a blessing in disguise, Scoop.

I got made redundant a few times in my various careers, and you know what?

The next job I got was better and more fun.

Keep that thought. :)

References are not important anymore. It is common to change jobs every 4-5 years. Employers are firing without a 2 week notice and employees are quitting without one. All's fair in love and war. There is a huge labor shortage so it's easy to find another job. Also, someone told me their HR department will not give any kind of info on their job performance, only hire/fire dates, etc. I've called my past employers and they said they never had a call about me for a reference, and I posted all that in my resume and made it easy to do. Still, never happened.

You tell a potential employer that after giving 16 years of your life to a company that they just hand you the papers for no reason and you walked without giving two week notice or helping them train your replacements, I think any human with a heart would understand. Nobody will keep you 16 years if you aren't doing a good job.

The times, they are 'a changin.

Most companies will only verify employment. They don't want to get sued.

This is a forced opportunity.

Animal, that is great advise and I agree 100%.

You have a point, but a man with integrity will do the right thing because it is for them and thier family they are doing it.
