1967 18hp evinrude steering problem

i just bought this motor used it runs great but the steering is really hard.when it is going across the lake you have to hold in to the tiller with everything u have to keep it going straight.It came with a four blade prop which im pretty sure isnt stock could that be the problem.any info would be graetly appreciated.THANKS

Does that motor have a trim tab?? If so, it may need to be adjusted. Turn it in small increments until you are straight.

So, it steers easy at a standstill, right? It might be that 4 blade. You don't really need a 4 blade do you? That is for houseboats and barges.

Try changing the motor tilt. Might make a difference.

thats what i thought too.do u know what the stock size and pitch would be for a 3 blade prop .

Model 18702, 18703 had a 3 blade prop,

regular: 9 x 10 1/2
optional: 9 x 10 or 9 x 9

btw, if the engine is hard to turn when off, there's a screw to adjust the 'auto-pilot' tension at the front underneath (at least it's on my '66 18hp)
