Post 1956 Evinrude 5.5 HP Flywheel Removal

I have removed the inspection cover bolts and the crankshaft nut on top of the flywheel and attached a 3 point puller via the 3 inspection cover bolts but am unable to break the flywheel loose eiher by tightening the puller bolt that contacts the top of the Crankshaft or by applying a moderate hammer blow to the top of the puller bolt after it is tightened. Additionally I have applied CRC over the period of a week and retried all of the above without success. I have reviewed the Parts manual for an inner retaining ring or something that I could be missing but so far have found nothing. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Also would like to discuss the use of moderate heat and the possible damage to the flywheel or components that are in direct contact with it.

Thanks

Don't be so timid. Use hardened Grade-8 bolts in the puller, screwed into the flywheel 7/16", no more and no less. Then give it heck. It WILL come off...with a pop. NO heat, please. And the CRC and other juices won't help, as you found out. Just pull harder. It is ok to lift up on the flywheel with the puller twanging tight and give the puller bolt a whack or two. It'll come off. In fact, the 5.5 isn't even one of the difficult ones.

When you put it back on, make sure the tapers are clean and dry and use a torque wrench to tighten the nut to 40-45 ft/lbs. This is a must!!!!

I'm assuming your "3 point puller" is a harmonic balancer type puller. Where you have three bolts in the flywheel and one large one in the center that pushes down on the crankshaft as it pulls the flywheel up.

If so, wrap a strap wrench around the flywheel and then continue to tighten the center bolt until the flywheel pops off. They can be a little stubborn. Do this instead of pounding on the crankshaft. When you pound on the crank with a hammer you risk damaging it.

As above. Leaqve the pressure on. Every oncew and a while, smack the puller bolt (large i=one in the cebter) with a hammer and put more pressure on it. One took me 3 days of this to get it off. Don't think it had been off since left the factory.

3 days??? give her heck. Mechanics cant wait 3 hours, they reef on it till it pops. Just keep tightening until it pops. Something will have to give and if you didn't buy a cheapo puller and used grade 8 bolts, it'll be the flywheel popping off... So try harder!

A mechanic wouldn't even take 3 minutes. He'd put the ol' air impact wrench on it and rapababp--POP and it's offa there!
