Default evinrude 10 hp shift linkage

I have a 1962 Evinrude 10hp outboard motor model 10024a. That little nut came off of the top of the shift linkage. How in the world do you get up there to put this back on? And how do you prevent this from happening again! Barry

Well, sir you have to remove the powerhead to get at it. There are supposed to be two stainless steel nuts, part number 306556, with a stainless steel star lockwasher between them, #303701. You will also need a new powerhead gasket, 308385. Don't worry, it's not as hard as it seems.

Thumbs up Re: evinrude 10 hp shift linkage

Thank you Rear Admiral, after looking at it when I read your message it made complete sense! I like your name because my dad was a navy man in WWII.

Not that hard of a procedure. I actually done it myself recently, found the missing nut in the gearcase. The hardest part is the nuts that mount the engine to exhaust housing. They are a pain to get off and retighten. If you have a automotive distributor wrench that will help significantly with atleast 2 of the 3 nuts.
