93 Evinrude - 30 HP Short shaft, reverse works fine, idles fine, no grinding noise, nothing happens when gear is put in forward, any ideas? I did run the motor in a lot of weeds last weekend btw...

no..The motor has been running perfect...last weekend I was running it in very shallow water, very muddy water with lots of weeds...I had to constantly stop the motor and put it in reverse to get the weeds off of the prop...Ran it this morning, forward was working fine, then all the sudden when I put it in forward the motor just revs up and the prop doesn't spin..

btw: when I put it in reverse, I can tell it's in gear because I can't move the prop by hand. When it's in forward gear, I can spin the prop by hand (not in gear). Don't know if this helps any...

appreciate any advice, I do have a service manual but it doesn't include any troubleshooting steps for this problem...

Check for spun prop. If so get the prop rehubbed.

Thanks for the reply Solittle, could I have a spun prop even if reverse is working?

I found the problem, the shift linkage nut inside the lower unit was loose, put a little thread locker on it, tightened it down and BAM! Shifts into forward gear now...

Remember to check the easy stuff first!
