Rebuilding a 1986 OMC Cobra 4.3, going in with as many new parts as possible. My question is the Engine coupler between the drive and the engine, is this a part that should be replaced as well, when I tore it down the splines look very good, appreciate what ever input is available with knowledge base on this Web Site

Re: 4.3 Engine Coupler

If it's greased well and has been in good alignment all these years you're probably just fine. If you have to replace it later though, you'll have to pull the engine.

The coupler on my 1966 Mark Twain lasted from 1966 to 2005. When it spun it appeared that someone had carefully drilled out the internal splines.....they were completely gone!

The replacement coupler was about $180.

My 1987 FourWinns Liberator had an OMC King Cobra 460 in it (that I recently replaced with a Merc 454 Bravo) The coupler in it was in fine shape after almost 20 years.

There are no new replacement couplers for the OMC 460....I think yours are available though.

Regards,

Rick
