1/8 lines running from reeds? to cylinder question

I have a 1983 merc 200 hp. I recently rebuilt the carbs. In the process I discovered small 1/8 inch ?rubber? lines running from the plate (reeds?)behind the carbs to each cylinder. One line for each cylinder (total 6) and one line running from the bottom of the power head to the top, all with 'barbed" fittings. Some but not all of the lines were split or actually broken (I assume from the age of the line). I have replaced all the lines with new1/8 inch fuel line. The three on the starboard side were difficult because there were behind the wiring. My question is what do the lines do, what is the function? And how have I helped myself if any, by making the repairs?

Those are the bleed lines and yes, you have helped yourself by making the repairs as they return oil to the bearing.
