1978 70 HP Evinrude

I can't seem to get the drive shaft out of the lower end. The Pinion gear is loose and the nut was able to thread off the bottom of the shaft but the shaft won't pull out? Any tricks to get it out and what could be holding it?

Have you removed the bearing housing that is below the water pump?

Yes, the Pinion gear looks like it's free but won't free itself and the the drive shaft would not lift, tried forcing it and now it won't spin, but afraid to bang away at housing anymore than I already have. Is there a press tool or is this uncommon?
