I have a 1986 Mariner 25 with electric start and remote steering with control box. I am trying to change the water pump. The problem is that I cannot figure out where to disconnect the shift rod. The only thing that i can figure out is that is disconnects right below the card. Does anyone know if this is the case? There is not the standard plug or cover where you would normally unhook the linkage. I have a manual for the motor. The problem is that nothing lines up accoring with the manual. It is basically a merc with Mariner stickers. Any help would be greatly apprectated. Thanks!

about halfway up the shaft, there should be an inch gap on the side closest to the transom, its in there, you've got to unscrew the long bolt upwards.
