Missing Gasket? Inline 6

Was going over the engine yesterday evening and noticed that I have a medium size opening shown in the pic below where no gasket or seal is showing. I checked this area on the old motor that I pulled and it is also not showing a gasket or seal that is sealing this area. My first inline 6, so don't know if this is normal or not or if I'm just really that unlucky. I'm just guessing that the area is sealed off by the cover gasket right above. Is that right?

Re: Missing Gasket? Inline 6

Sorry. It's the lip of the oil pan/timing chain cover??. Directly outside the diameter/left side of the crankshaft pulley. Best I can explain the location. Front motor mount is mounted in the picture so should be pretty easy for someone with a Inline 6 to see on the front of the engine, unless its buried on your boat I guess.
