My 1996 chaparral 1930 5.0 is reving up high and slamming into gear forward. But it does not do it in reverse. I dropped the foot to replace the impeller. I left in forward when I dropped it and installed it. Any suggstions on how to correct this. Thanks to all in advance.

Since you have a 1996 boat, you probably have an Alpha I Gen II drive. Unless someone changed the transom shield and drive to put a 1990 or earlier drive on.
What rpm does your engine idle at?

Boat idles arount 800to900 R.P.M.

There is your problem, get it down to 650 to 700 where it belongs and it will work better.
