Drop lower unit 1998 Johnson 90HP

I need to have my skeg plate repaired. Which requires me to drop the lower unit. I have never done this can someone help with instructions. What postion should the gear shift be Forward Neutral or reverse?

as a general rule it is a fairly easy job, as long as all the bolts come out and the drive shaft is not stuck! and I leave the control/gear shift in neutral

A manual will pay for itself many times over you will find, the diagrams and pics are priceless when doing an unfamiliar job. take your prop off before you begin as a precaution. You will also need to disconnect the shift rod or it will only drop down a 1/4 of an inch.
