Default Smoking 1994 150 horsepower Mercury

This engine which I just purchased used on a 21 foot Pursuit smokes heavy on startup.
When I remove the cap on the oil tank after turning off the motor, the oil level starts to creep up and overflow from the tank.
What would this indicate?
I haven't had an outboard since the seventies so this oil injection is new to me.
What's the fix?

My motor smoked a lot at startup too when I first got it last year.

In summary, I replaced two check valves on the oil injection system (in case excess oil was being pushed into the fuel line after motor shut down) and I cleaned the carbs (in case the float valves were leaking after motor shut down). The motor ran fine afterwards without excessive smoke at startup. I can't be sure to what extent replacing the PSI check valves or cleaning the carbs fixed my problem since I did both at the same time. However, the cost and effort to do both of these steps was minimal and the overall result was success. Click on the below link to read more on this subject.

Your results, of course, may vary. Good luck

That would be normal for about 2 minutes after shutdown. If you pop the cap and it fills up after 5 minutes, the check valve needs replacing. (Starboard side near front, low) The valve puts crankcase pressure on the bulk oil tank in the boat, to keep the motor tank full. It should regulate the pressure to about 2 lbs, and let it off shortly after shutdown. If it doesn't let it off, oil will creep into the fuel line so you burn much oil when you start up.

It is pretty normal for that engine to smoke a bit on startup.

hope it helps
John
