i have a 1984 evinrude 150h.p. i got it from a guy who said reverse just grinds. i adjusted cable all the way out it will go in but pops out when you throttle up.i disconnected cable held shift lever in with wooden paddle it stayed but when i released pressure it slipt back out .can anyone tell me if the cable would have the strengh to hold it in or the clutch is shot?if the clutch is bad is it made of softer metal than gear or will i have to change the set and clutch?how difficult is it?i was a millwright at one time.

you need to adjust the shift shaft lenght
but it might be a worn clutch dog
