1972 Mercury 4hp fuel issue
Just picked this one up the other day. Of course no spark. They never do it seems. Pulled the flywheel and found the points glazed over as usual. Also the wires from the stator to the coil and the points to the coils were badly frayed. replaced the wires, cleaned and regapped the points and voila spark. Carb looked real clean and got it to fire on the second pull. Once running had to hold the choke half on until it warmed up a bit then it would idle fine without the choke on. Let is sit for a bit while I worked on something else. Went back to start it and would not start. I had not reprimed it so I took the primer bulb and found it soft. Pumped it back up and got it to fire and run good again. It seems like it loses it's prime went it sits for a few minutes. Tried it a couple of times and the same thing. Would have to prime it again to get it to run. A couple of things. This does not have a kill switch so I am idling it down low and choking it to kill it. Secondly, this originally had a metal gas line and some one replaced it with OMC rubber fuel line so there maybe an air leak? lastly the connector to the motor does not seem to snap in good and seal. Another air leak? Once started it runs fine and will stay running.
