2000 5.0 mercruiser - fuel consumption/loss of power

I have a 2000 5.0 inboard mercury in a 20' searay and my fuel consumption has gotten bad lately. And 'out of the hole' power is slow. the motor seems to check out fine. May have gotten sand sucked into engine in the last year or two, can that cause this?

Check if the boat has become heavier ,than specified.In other words -water under the floor and saturated foam.

How long has it been since the motor/ drive has been Serviced,+ Tuned Up,..??..??.....

did u get it fixed my 5.0 uses about 60 gallons per hour and smells of fuel. any ideas
